Chapter Thirteen

The traitorous bitch. Usaeil should’ve known. But of all the people to betray her, she hadn’t thought the first in line would be Maeve the Merciless.

Usaeil stared out the upper floor window of the ruins of the Light Castle on the Fae Realm, her arms crossed as she thought about Maeve. The ruthless Dark that had built her empire on the ashes of her father’s death was someone Usaeil had kept her eye on for a long time. She’d watched as Maeve clawed her way to the top, toppling over anyone who got in her way.

To think, Usaeil had considered Maeve someone she might bring into her new court as an ally. It just proved to Usaeil that there was no one she could trust other than herself. Everyone was out to get her.

But Maeve? Why her? Why now?

Usaeil’s gaze narrowed. Her mind immediately went to Rhi. Then she laughed. Rhi was a great many things, and she might dirty herself to interact with Balladyn because they were old friends, but that’s where things ended. There was no way Rhi would have searched out Maeve.

Besides, Rhi had no inkling about those Usaeil dealt with.

That the Dragon Kings were involved was a good possibility. No matter how much she tried, Usaeil had yet to curtail their magic. Despite the years and the growth of her power, she couldn’t match theirs without a little help—namely that of the Druids.

But the Kings hated the Dark Fae. There was absolutely no way they would ever work with one.

That left only two other enemies: Balladyn and the Reapers.

While Balladyn had managed to do a great many good deeds for the Dark since he took the throne, he wasn’t smart enough to piece together the intricate network of Fae Usaeil had cultivated through the eons.

Not alone, at least.

The Reapers were a different story, however. They weren’t strong enough to bring her down, but that didn’t mean they wouldn’t try to irritate her. Which is exactly what they were doing. It really was too bad that they had brought Maeve into it.

Usaeil didn’t care how they had gotten the Dark to help them. She didn’t even concern herself with how they had figured out that she’d had dealings with Maeve in the past. It was enough that the Dark female had imparted to them the one thing Usaeil had told her—the location of one of her secret places.

The divulging of such a confidential piece of information had been done on purpose. Usaeil had told the four Fae she’d considered for positions in her new court four different locations to see if any—or all—would betray her.

It galled her that it was Maeve. Out of the four, she’d honestly believed that Maeve would hold out the longest. But the Dark would no longer be a problem once the Tracker was finished with her.

Usaeil had Trackers at all of the locations to make it appear as if she were there. It’d worked for the Napa house. But the more Usaeil thought about Maeve turning on her, the angrier she became.
